The arrest occurred on October 18 in Driggs, Idaho, after Wells left a birthday party thrown in her honor. She was busted after police noticed her car swerving across the center lines of a highway. The sheriffs deputy who arrested her reported that he smelled "a strong odor of burning marijuana" wafting out of the car. She has been sentenced to five days in jail and six months probation.
The Sheriff Caught Me With Marijuana, Too
Back in the early 1970s, when I was a reckless kid, I too was snagged by the sheriff for possession of marijuana. Now, you must understand that the Los Angeles County Sheriff had and still has a reputation for not kidding around. When I saw the blinking lights on that cruiser, a bone-chilling sense of fear swept up and down my spine.
It was a Friday night I believe, and I - like Dawn Wells interestingly enough - was returning home from a party. It was a party in which marijuana was smoked and alcohol was consumed. As I recall, I had not actually smoked any marijuana that evening; in fact, all I had consumed was a few beers. But that really made no difference because I had a joint in my jacket pocket.
So, I wasn't drunk or high on pot while driving my car that fateful evening. I wasn't driving erratically - no swerving from lane to lane or anything dramatic like that. No, I was pulled over because one of my taillights was out. It was just plain bad luck.
Wild thoughts raced through by head when I was pulled over (I had a friend in the car with me, by the way). I thought my life was over. I thought my parents would disown me. I had never been in any trouble with the law and I was scared out of my mind.
I'll never forget what it was like to be searched. I remember the deputy running his hands up and down my legs and sweeping up to my, um, private bits.
This was not a pleasant experience. I remember the sheriff asking me and my friend if we had consumed any drugs or alcohol.

My immediate response was that I had had one can of beer. I had probably had at least two, but I felt for some reason that it was OK to admit to having one (though I had not yet reached the legal drinking age). But then he discovered the marijuana. I'll never forget those words: "You're under arrest for possession of marijuana."
Then something interesting happened. One deputy took me to the side and the other took my friend to the side. I remember that at the time, there was a serial killer in LA - one who preyed upon transients. His MO was to slit their throats, as I recall. I remember mentioning this to the deputy and noting that the serial killer's crimes were so much more heinous than having a little marijuana in one's possession. He agreed with me. He also asked me if I knew of any drug dealers that I could rat out. I didn't.
Then the two deputies had a brief "conference" while my friend and I stood to the side. And then a miracle happened. They let us go! I thanked God profusely for my good fortune. Why did they let us go? As it turns out, my friend knew a drug dealer and ratted him out to the deputy. It was a plea bargain of sorts. I want to go on record her and emphasize that I no longer smoke marijuana. I blame the whole experience on youthful indiscretion.
As for Dawn Wells, well, I think she'll be just fine. There are certainly worse things she could have been busted for. I always had the hots for Mary Ann, by the way. She was way hotter than Ginger.
